Sophomore at the National Sports Academy, Tervel Zamfirov, decisively secured first place in the parallel giant slalom at the World Winter University Games in Turin, Italy. In the final, our snowboarder outpaced Korean Junho Ma by 26 hundredths of a second.

Tervel Zamfirov's achievement is particularly remarkable following his strong performance at the Snowboard World Cup in Bansko last week, where he made it into the top 4 of a high-ranking competition for the first time. On his way to the gold medal in Turin, Zamfirov defeated Michal Wilk (Poland), Daichi Shimizu (Japan), and Fabian Lantschner (Italy).

Only six hundredths of a second kept another National Sports Academy student, Aleksandar Krashnyak, from reaching the final. In the semifinals, he was narrowly beaten by Ma. In the battle for third place, Krashnyak was defeated by Lantschner. Both Zamfirov and Krashnyak are set to compete in the parallel slalom event at the Universiade later today.

This is yet another success for students from the National Sports Academy at the World University Games in Turin, following Mario Matikanov's bronze medal win in the 10 km freestyle cross-country skiing event.
